Thanksgiving is a special day of the year. It is a time to reflect and appreciate all the things in your life and be thankful for all of the special people in your life. Falling on the last Thursday of the month of November, it is the day that begins the Western winter holiday season, that last until just past the the first day of January and the new year celebrations. In many parts of Europe the season continues until January 6th, which is called “Three Kings Day”.
Each year there are many things to be thankful for, even in this odd year of 2020. Family, friends, opportunities and challenges are just some of the things we can all be thankful for. Take a moment, reflect and think of all the great things in your own life that you can be thankful for.
At the Xiwai International Middle School we celebrate this day in style. We have a very special lunch for our students which includes real Turkey, the traditional meal! It is always very delicious and the students love having this special lunch and being able to learn about the Western traditions. They eat, they laugh, share stories with each other, and it is a great opportunity for the teachers to bond with the students in a relaxed atmosphere. Just as important, they learn why and how Thanksgiving was started and increase their knowledge of Western culture.
This year our teachers and students also made a unique celebration where we were able to combine both Chinese and Western ideas into one special event. We constructed a “Thanksgiving Day Wish Tree”! This combined the concept of a traditional Chinese wish tree and giving thanks for something in your life. Of course the traditional Chinese tree has people hang “wishes” on a tree at the Chinese lunar new year and we at Xiwai are always finding ways to merge East and West! Our global vision combining with national pride.
Overall it was another great day at the Xiwai International Middle School that was enjoyed by teachers, students and the staff and we look forward to next year!
Happy Holidays Everyone!
