August 27th, Xiwai held an orientation to welcome over 70 foreign teachers for this new semester in 2018.

New term

& New start

First of all, Dr. Lin, the chief Principal of Xiwai, gave a warm welcome to all the teachers and gave an inspiring speech about internationalism and globalism. Open-mindedness, diversity, sacrifice, flexibility, and integration were highlighted. He presented vivid examples to emphasize that in order to build a truly international school, teachers should be open-minded and accept different cultures as well as people with different backgrounds.

Chance & Challenge

The Head of International Division, Monika Pan, gave a warm welcome to all the teachers and wished all the foreign teachers a wonderful life in Xiwai.

Mr. Enrico Piccinini, the Principal of the bilingual middle/high school, provided an introduction of our school. He mentioned that we had accredited College Board and a Cambridge schoolcurrently expanding, with new schools in China and potential new schools and programs abroad. He encouraged teachers to work with adaptability, passion, patience and team spirit, as well as a good sense of humor to build a distinct international curriculum with both challenges and opportunities.

Creativity

Other orientation activities included a workshop: “Creating a Culture of Success” given by Mr. Emanuel Ruiz, the Principal of the bilingual primary school, and Mrs. Kenna Rasmussen, Deputy Vice Principal of Bilingual Primary School, which presented a topic of “Visible Learning”. They proposed how to be successful with students learning and have a large positive impact. They set off an engaging discussion during their presentation.

The workshop that followed was given by Mr. Kurt Goetzinger, Academic Head/ Assistant Principal of Bilingual Middle School. He explained  “How to Design Effective Lessons” to achieve the year-end goals.

The workshop “Cross-Cultural Communication”was next made by Mr. Steven Herring, Coordinator of Bilingual Middle School,  who pointed out how to communicate with foreign co-teachers and how to build a good relationship with students.

In the afternoon, Mr. Jo Folscher held a professional workshop about “Managing Student Behavior”. During this workshop, teachers shared their teaching experience and valuable teaching strategies.

In an effort to ease the new teachers’ adaptation to work and life in Shanghai, staffs from the bank, as well as the school's finance and health departments, were invited to introduce bank cards and issue insurance cards to them. The Foreign Affairs Office offered a “Welcome Pack” for every teacher, which included maps of Shanghai and the metro system, the school calendar, emergency contact forms, management team list, school bus schedule, etc.

The new teachers have benefited a lot from this successful training. It was crucial to prepare for a successful school year.
