Thanksgiving_ speech

As many of you know, the fourth Thursday of every November is the U.S. holiday called “Thanksgiving.” Thanksgiving Day is a typical American holiday. It is an annual day of thanks for the blessings people have enjoyed during the year. The theme of thanksgiving has always been peace and plenty, health and happiness.

The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the English settlers on December 13, 1621. In September, 1620, 102 English men took the ship called Mayflower to the New World. After 66 days at sea, they landed at America. The first winter was terrible, and only half of them survived.

The next year, the native Indians became their friends and showed them how to plant corn and grow other things for food. These people had a good harvest in the fall, so they invited Indians to have a big party outdoors at long tables to thank God for his love and mercy. They ate, drank, and played games for three days.

In 1864, President Lincoln appointed the last Thursday of November to be the National Thanksgiving Day. Today the Americans usually hold a big family dinner to celebrate the holiday. They have such traditional food as roast turkey, pumpkin pie, apples, cranberry sauce, squash and so on.

This is a special day to give one’s heartfelt thanks for their existence, and for their family members, friends, and opportunities. Students from Xiwai, please show your love and gratitude to those who love you and who you love. Say thanks to your dear parents, who gave you life and bring you up, say thanks to your beloved teachers, who pass on knowledge and care for you; say thanks to your close friends, who share happiness with you and help you out when you are in need. Last, but not least, please let me say thanks to you all. Thank you for listening to my speech, and please pass on the thanks to every one you know.
